For 7 weeks, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., the Lighthouse hosts its annual Summer Academic Camp. Each summer 150 campers in grades 1st through 9th are engaged in a balance of recreational, academic, and enrichment opportunities. Each weekday for 3 hours campers are engaged in the core academic subjects of Math, Science, and Language Arts. Our center is a safe haven from negative influences. We offer a stimulating environment whereby campers experience Dance, Theatre, Martial Arts, Culinary, Junior Achievement, Video & Film Production and so much more! In addition to our Academic and Extracurricular Activities campers go on weekly field trips and swimming every Friday.
The Hungry Minds Culinary Arts class, allows campers to explore and feed the hunger of the mind and their stomachs as they discover how to create great food using creativity and knowledge in the kitchen. While food preparation is the main ingredient of each Hungry Minds class, each culinary class adds a heap of planning skills, a scoop of decision making, a pinch of mathematical equations and laughter to taste as we scientifically maneuver our way to fabulous dishes to complete each young chef’s experience. Classes are taught by classically trained chefs!
Research shows that dancing boosts a child’s self-esteem, makes them feel good, and helps them gain confidence in their own abilities. This is why dance is an important part of the Light House Summer Academic Camp. We provide afternoon dance workshops in Hip Hop and Zumba, as well as actively engaging campers during the morning rally. These activities allow our students to release energy and have fun before and after three hours of academics. Dance keeps campers happy, healthy and fit!
In addition to physical activity and academics, campers are offered an opportunity to participate in Improv workshops, challenging students to think outside of the box. The arts are an important complement to our academic program, and provide an outlet for artistic expression. At the end of the program, students have a chance to demonstrate their talents during our Summer Showcase where creativity abounds.
During the Lighthouse Summer Academic Camp, campers are offered an opportunity to participate in a media arts program which was designed to teach youth audio and video production. The media arts program is used as a means of engaging youth in their education—developing artistic, critical thinking, and career skills while examining issues in their own environments. The Lighthouse partners with the MEMa Tech-Kno Production to present workshops on Audio Recording, Video Recording, Sound, Editing & Mixing Audio, Editing Video, and Mastering the Final Product. Campers also receive tips on the types of “behind-the-scenes” jobs available in the world of entertainment and media.
